Happy Birthday Chris Squire: Spotify Playlists Featuring Yes & More

Today marks what would have been the birthday of renowned bassist Chris Squire who died on June 27, 2015 at the age of 67. As a co-founding member of the iconic progressive rock band Yes, the man nicknamed “Fish” developed a signature style through complex compositions played on his Rickenbacker bass. This edition of Saturday Stream examines Squire’s standout work with Yes and with other projects he had a hand in during his storied career.

The official Yes Spotify account showcases a number of curated playlists, two of which are featured below. First up is a 20-tracks collection of personally chosen songs that were inspirations to Squire as a bass player. Squire goes into some detail about the songs in this #askYes session on the Yes website. You’ll find tracks by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, Stevie Wonder, The Police, many Motown and soul classics, and more. Stream it here:

Next is a massive, 100+ song playlist featuring “a selection of tracks written by, co-written by or featuring Chris Squire.” The career-spanning set features plenty of Yes recordings, as well as contributions Squire made to songs by Steve Hackett, Gov’t Mule, The Syn, Mabel Greer’s Toyshop and others. Squire solo work, as well as solo efforts by his Yes band mates Billy Sherwood, Rick Wakeman, Peter Banks and Alan White is also prominently featured.
