Happy Birthday Bob Weir: Bobby Plays Dylan
By Andy Kahn Oct 16, 2016 • 7:07 am PDT
Today is the 69th birthday of founding Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir. Bobby’s been busy lately, staying active with and having just issued a solo album Blue Mountain which he’s currently supporting with a tour.
This birthday-edition of Sunday Cinema focuses on Bobby performing the work of recently awarded Nobel Prize Laureate Bob Dylan. Weir and the Dead famously toured with Dylan in 1987 playing many of the iconic singer-songwriter’s compositions together. Many of Dylan’s most beloved songs such as “All Along The Watchtower,” “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and others were staples of later Dead setlists and Weir has performed the Nobel winner’s songs in various settings with different lineups throughout his career.
Below is a set of videos featuring Bobby playing Dylan as solo performer, with the Grateful Dead, Dead & Company and moe. as well as with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Jonathan Wilson.
