One of the most recent installments of NPR Music’s popular Tiny Desk Concert series features Wu-Tang Clan’s GZA teaming up with New Orleans brass band The Soul Rebels. GZA led the group through three songs from his 1995 solo album Liquid Swords at Bob Boilen’s desk at NPR Music’s Washington, D.C. headquarters.
The Soul Rebels have performed live with GZA a number of times in the past including a March concert at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. Up first from the pairing of GZA and The Soul Rebels for the new Tiny Desk Concert is “Living In The World Today,” the first track off Liquid Swords. The rapper then leads the NOLA band on “Duel Of The Iron Mic” before completing a trifecta of the LP’s initial three tunes with a performance of the title track. GZA tells the story of how “Liquid Swords” came together while The Soul Rebels provide its groove.
