Guests Galore Help Greensky Bluegrass Close Denver Run

Last night, Greensky Bluegrass ended a three-night stand at the Ogden Theatre in Denver by bringing up a number of their musical friends who were in town to share the stage.

The sit-in fun started early as Umphrey’s McGee keyboardist Joel Cummins and sacred steel specialist Roosevelt Collier emerged at the beginning of the show for “Working On A Building” and “Lose My Way.” Cummins and Collier then headed to nearby Quixote’s for the latest installment of Collier’s Colorado Get Down. Greensky ended the set by welcoming guitarist Eric Krasno, who was in town with Soulive, out for a rendition of Norton Buffalo’s “Ain’t No Bread In The Breadbox.”

Greensky Bluegrass came out for the second set with “Bring Out Your Dead,” which was followed by the band’s enthralling cover of “When Doves Cry” by Prince. Later in the set, GB guitarist Dave Bruzza took a turn on drums during “For Sure Uh Huh.” A “Leap Year” second set closer featured teases of Phish’s “Martian Monster.”

The evening and run culminated with two encores. Up first was guitarist Tom Hamilton adding to “Old Barns” before Hamilton’s American Babies band mates Al Smith and Justin Mazer joined in the fun on a cover of Grateful Dead staple “Eyes Of The World.” Greensky Bluegrass ended the night by themselves with a second encore of “Drink Up And Go Home.” Next up for Greensky is a pair of shows at the State Theatre in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Friday and Saturday.
