The Major Rager concert featuring Umphrey’s McGee, The Revivalists, Earphunk and TAUKing McGee took place yesterday in Augusta, Georgia. Umphrey’s McGee headlined the event with two sets including an insane “All Night Wrong” performance filled with a bevy of covers, bust outs and guests.
UM kicked off their time on stage in Augusta with the all-cover All Night Wrong set. The band opened with the Pink Floyd combo of “In The Flesh” > “Another Brick In The Wall” ahead of the UM debut cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Dancing Days.” Trombonist Natalie Cressman, trumpeter Jen Hartswick and saxophonist Mike Quinn then emerged to help out on Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough.” A big surprise came next, when famed soul vocalist Sharon Jones joined the horns, longtime James Brown backing vocalist Amy Christian and James Brown Band guitarist Keith Jenkins on the UM debut cover of Brown’s “I Got You (I Feel Good).”
Christian and the horns stayed out to assist Umphrey’s on The Doobie Brothers’ “Black Water” and The Band’s “Ophelia.” The set rolled on with UM and the horns treating fans to covers of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” Huey Lewis & The News’ “I Want A New Drug,” Paul Simon’s “Late In The Evening” and Wings’ “Live & Let Die.” Umphrey’s hadn’t performed “I Want A New Drug” since May 29, 2011 – a span of 514 shows – while “Late In The Evening” was last played on December 31, 2011. The set concluded with Hartswick and Cressman adding vocals, besides their instrumental contributions as part of the horn section with Quinn, to Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and Heart’s “Barracuda.”
The second set was an all original affair heavy on the jams as rain fell over the Augusta Common. “Speak Up,” an original debuted back on New Year’s Eve, opened set two ahead of “Phil’s Farm.” Next up was a “Deeper” > “Resolution” > “Hajimemashite” pairing before “Wappy Sprayberry” > “Higgins” closed out the set. A lengthy “Bad Friday” encore brought the evening to a close. Umphrey’s now heads to The Ritz in Raleigh for shows tonight and tomorrow. Webcasts are available via TourGigs.com.
