Greta Van Fleet Ends Hiatus With Intimate Bowery Ballroom Show & New Single

Greta Van Fleet returned to the stage for the first time in two years on Wednesday to perform a surprise show at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom. The Michigan-birthed quartet used the opportunity to debut two songs, including “Play Your Games,” which was released as a single today.

Siblings Jake (guitar), Josh (vocalist) and Sam Kishka (bass/keyboards), along with bandmate Danny Wagner (drums) hadn’t performed publicly since September 29, 2024 before the Wednesday night underplay. Additionally, the foursome last played Bowery Ballroom nearly a decade prior in 2017.

While rumors of Greta Van Fleet’s demise were swirling earlier this spring when the band proclaimed “thanks for the wild ride” on social media, the brotherly act were clearly playing on words. GVF recorded “Play Your Games” in Tennessee with co-producer Mike Elizondo (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Sheryl Crow, Lake Street Dive). The track arrived with an accompanying music video. There’s been so mention yet on whether “Play Your Games” or “Tear It Down,” the other song premiered at Bowery Ballroom, will be part of a bigger project.

Fittingly, the first Greta Van Fleet gig in 605 days began with “Highway Tune,” the lead single from their debut EP Black Smoke Rising. The quartet continued the focus on their early days by performing “Safari Song,” “Flower Power” and “Black Smoke Rising.”

The band then pulled “When The Curtain Falls” and “Age Of Man” off their debut full-length, 2018’s Anthem Of The Peaceful Army. Greta Van Fleet moved forward through their discography with “Heat Above” and “Light My Love,” two tracks featured on 2021’s The Battle At Garden’s Gate before looking to their most recent album, 2023’s Starcatcher, for “Meeting The Master.”
