Gregg Allman Teams With Scott Sharrard For Acoustic Set At Red Rocks In 2016

Just over a week ago the world lost a musical legend when Gregg Allman died due to complications from liver cancer. Last summer the first signs something was amiss surfaced when Gregg started canceling a bunch of tour dates at the end of July.
Allman went on to perform just two full sets in public after his hospitalization in the summer of 2016, a performance at Red Rocks with guitarist Scott Sharrard on September 25 and one with his solo band at Atlanta’s Lakewood Amphitheatre on October 29. For this week’s Sunday Cinema we’ve collected high-definition footage of Allman’s unplugged performance with Sharrard at Red Rocks from what turned out to be his penultimate live set.
Allman may have been sick and weak, but his voice was strong as he powered through a set loaded with signature songs at the iconic Morrison, Colorado venue. Gregg and Scott began the set with a “Midnight Rider” as the crowd went wild for the return of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer. Up next was a beautiful rendition of “Melissa” followed by a cover of Muddy Waters’ “I Love The Life I Live, I Live The Life I Love” which foreshadowed the end of road.
In Gregg’s final years he often performed Jackson Browne’s “These Days” and the song was right in his wheelhouse. The version Allman and Sharrard laid down at Red Rocks was particularly powerful. Scott and Gregg then treated fans to an acoustic arrangement of the Allman Brothers Band classic “Whipping Post.” The pair ended the set with “One Way Out,” a song that Gregg may not have written but sure fit his voice like a glove.
