Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes Sam Bush & Billy Strings In Nashville
By Jeffrey Greenblatt Jan 21, 2018 • 12:54 pm PST
Greensky Bluegrass pulled into Nashville on Saturday night for a two-set show at Marathon Music Works. The jamgrass act once again delivered a diverse mix of originals and covers both new and old while welcoming out a pair of guests.
The five-piece band’s first set got underway with a string of their own material delivering takes on “No Idea,” “Living Over” and “In Control.” They next looked to bluegrass brother act Jim & Jesse for their version of the jazz standard “Airmail Special.” Later in the opening frame, Greensky welcomed out newgrass pioneer Sam Bush to join them. The talented mandolin player lent a hand for a four-song stretch that started with “Fo Sho Uh Huh.” After a take on “Demons,” Greensky dusted off their cover of the Allen Toussaint-penned tune “Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley,” for the first time since November of 2015. Bush got a chance to sing lead on the band’s second ever attempt at the song, which originally appeared on Robert Palmer’s 1974 debut of the same name. The augmented act brought their set to a close with “Train Junkie.”
The Kalamazoo, Michigan-based act kicked off their second set with a pair of setlist staples with “The Four” and “The Radio Blues.” For the second night in a row, Greensky invited out Billy Strings to join them. The up-and-coming guitarist assisted on “Who Is Frederico?” and “Burn Them.” Later in the set, the quintet offered up their tenth take on “When I Get My Hands On You” playing the track The New Basement Tapes first since June of last year. The band brought their night to end with one more cover playing the Spencer Davis Group hit “Gimme Some Lovin'” for the second time since debuting it on New Year’s Eve in Chicago.
