Greensky Bluegrass Plays Poolside Covers Set At Strings & Sol Festival

Yesterday the Strings & Sol Festival, which is taking place at the Now Sapphire Resort in Puerto Morelos, Mexico hit its midway point. The destination festival features a number of the jam scene’s acoustic-leaning acts with the likes of Yonder Mountain String Band, Railroad Earth and Leftover Salmon performing multiple sets on a beach. Included on the bill is Greensky Bluegrass, who played a special poolside set on Saturay afternoon.

The Michigan-based band used the opportunity to do something a little bit different for their second set of the festival as they avoided their own catalog completely and offered up a selection of cover tunes. The five-piece act kicked things off with Bob Marley’s “Small Axe,” from the reggae icon’s 1973 release Burnin’. Next came a pair of Grateful Dead tunes as they delivered “Eyes Of The World” and “The Other One,” which segued into John Hartford’s “I’m Still Here.” Greensky then had a bit of fun with their poolside location by playing Los Del Río’s mega-hit “Macarena.”

The jamgrass act went on to nod to Phish with “Chalkdust Torture” and then performed “Yellow Eyes” by their friend Rayland Baxter. Greensky continued the set by dusting off their cover of “Please Don’t Bury Me, which was the quintet’s first time performing the John Prince classic since March. A run of “One Way Out,” Paul Simon’s “Gumboots” and Prince’s “When Doves Cry” brought their set to a close.
