Greensky Bluegrass Loads Matinee Set With Songs Phish Has Covered
Michigan jamgrass act Greensky Bluegrass played a Monday afternoon matinee at the Las Vegas outpost of Brooklyn Bowl. The band loaded their set with covers Phish has performed at some point in the past.
Up first was a take on The Dillards’ “The Old Home Place” followed by Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman” and “Time” and “Breathe” by Pink Floyd. The set rolled on with Josh White’s “Paul & Silas” and Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch” sung by bassist Mike Devol. From there Greensky tackled “A Day In The Life” by The Beatles and Tim O’Brien’s “Nellie Kane” as well as Traffic’s “Light Up Or Leave Me Alone” featuring “We’re An American Band” by Grand Funk Railroad within. GSBG then pulled off Velvet Underground’s “Rock & Roll,” “Ride Captain Ride” by Blues Image, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “The Ballad Of Curtis Loew” and “Beauty Of My Dreams” by Del McCoury.
A lengthy “Broke Mountain Breakdown” was Greensky’s original contribution to the set, but they soon worked the song into portions of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” by The Beatles and covered “Sweet Emotion” (Aerosmith), “Walk Away” (James Gang) and “After Midnight” (JJ Cale) before concluding “Broke Mountain Breakdown.” The band took an opportunity to wish Anders Beck a Happy Birthday to begin an encore that featured “Rocky Top” after a “Free Bird” fakeout.
