Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes The Lil Smokies At Red Rocks

By Nate Todd Sep 14, 2019 12:12 pm PDT

Greensky Bluegrass kicked off a three-night run at Red Rocks on Friday night. The bluegrass outfit would welcome fiddler Jake Simpson of opening act The Lil Smokies at the beginning of their second set and the entire band for the encore.

Greensky got things going with a cover of Pink Floyd’s “In The Flesh” for the first time since Halloween 2018, followed by a “Bring Out Your Dead” sandwich with “Before Bring Out Your Dead” in the middle. “Cold Feet,” “New Rize Hill,” “Collateral Damage” and “Living Over” would follow ahead of a continuous block of “Blood Sucking F(r)iends,” “Broke Mountain Breakdown,” “Funk Jam,” and The James Gang’s “Walk Away.” “Broke Mountain Breakdown Reprise” would close out the first frame.

Greensky started the second set with “Like Reflections” followed by “Burn Them.” The headliners would then welcome Simpson for “Fixin To Ruin,” “Merely Avoiding” and “Worried About the Weather.” “Wings for Wheels” and “The Radio Blues” came next ahead of “Do It Alone” into The Beatles’ “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road” and the second set closer “Courage For The Road.”

Greensky would reemerge with the entire Lil Smokies in tow for a rendition of Peter Rowan’s “Midnight Moonlight,” which was last played by Greensky on New Year’s Eve 2017.
