Michigan-based Greensky Bluegrass held a pair of hometown shows this weekend at the Kalamazoo State Theatre. Fellow Michigan native, singer-songwriter May Erlewine opened both of the concerts in Kalamazoo and she sat-in with GSBG each night as well. Lansing-based keyboardist Mike Lynch was a guest during Saturday’s performance that also saw the band welcome members of their crew to the stage for a celebratory finale.

Friday’s action featured three Greensky Bluegrass debuts, beginning with their first set opening cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You.” A few songs later Erlewine was brought back to the stage to lead the first GSBG performance of her original “The River Jordan.” Erlewine stuck around for a subsequent take on “Past My Prime.” Opening night’s second set was highlighted by extended renditions of “Worried About The Weather” and Traffic’s “Light Up Or Leave Me Alone.” Another classic rock cover debut was in store for the encore as Greensky offered their arrangement of The Rolling Stones’ “Salt Of The Earth.”

A 20-minute “Leap Year” got Saturday’s first set started and segued into The Beatles’ “A Day In The Life,” which was followed by “The Four” and “Bottle Dry.” Erlewine’s sit-in on Saturday came toward the back half of the opening set, joining GSBG on a cover the Aretha Franklin hit “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” The special guest also augmented a performance of “Reverend” before exiting ahead of the closing “Kerosene.”

GSBG kicked off their final set of the weekend in Kzoo with “Jaywalking.” Set two also included a cover of Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re An American Band” as well as a rendition of “Broke Mountain Breakdown” that fit “Old Home Place” within. Lynch came out to add keys to “For Sure Uh Huh” and a lengthy “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox,” leaving ahead of the “Windshield” closer. A debut of Sly & The Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” was selected for the encore as the stage was filled with Erlewine, Lynch and members of the Greensky Bluegrass crew to bring an end to the hometown run of shows with another “thankful” cover.
