Greensky Bluegrass Camp Greensky Guests Include Billy Strings, Holly Bowling & Tom Hamilton

Greensky Bluegrass hosted the second annual Camp Greensky Music Festival this past weekend in Wellston, Michigan. The quintet headlined each night and welcomed a bevy of guests over the course of the event including Billy Strings, Holly Bowling and Tom Hamilton.

The five-piece opened their first set on Thursday by paying tribute to year two of Camp Greensky in pairing debut covers of Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston’s “It Takes Two” and Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets To Paradise.” A “Can’t Stop Now” that came soon thereafter featured teases of “Two Tickets To Paradise.” Greensky’s initial guest of the weekend was mandolinist Jarrod Walker of Billy Strings’ band, who added to “Burn Them” in the middle of the second set on Thursday. The frame concluded with a wild version of “Don’t Lie” featuring Strings and banjoist Billy Failing complete with Strings’ “Meet Me At The Creek” within. The 2019 debut of Bob Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You” was the encore on night one.

Bowling emerged at the tailend of Friday’s first set to add to “Past My Prime,” “What You Need” and a cover of Bruce Hornsby’s “King Of The Hill.” Holly’s Ghost Light band mate Tom Hamilton also contributed to “King Of The Hill.” Friday’s second set also included a pair of guest spots. Guitarist/vocalist Seth Bernard led the group through his own “Baby You’re A Power,” while fiddler Jake Simpson of The Lil Smokies added to “Run Or Die.” For the encore, Greensky said farewell on Friday with a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City.”

Saturday’s GSBG action featured a total of three sets. After two sets and an encore, the band treated attendees to a surprise late night performance filled mostly with covers. The first guest on Saturday was vocalist Lindsay Lou, who sang “In Control” with Greensky towards the end of the opening stanza. Later in the evening, guitarist Lyle Brewer added to “Wings For Wheels” and “Kerosene.” The second set was followed by an encore of “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack featuring Lindsay Lou.

The late night performance consisted completely of covers bookended by the Greensky original “Take Cover.” Included within were such tunes as Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re An American Band,” the Grateful Dead’s “Friend Of The Devil,” “Mr. Charlie” and “China Cat Sunflower,” another take on Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets To Paradise” and Paul Simon’s “Gumboots.” Greensky’s performance of “China Cat” gave way to the end of “Take Cover.”
