A holiday tradition continues as the Grateful Dead yule log is now live on YouTube. The 2024 installment of the yule log features looped video of a cracking fireplace accompanied by audio of the band’s June 7, 8 and 9, 1977 concerts at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom.

Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings, a 9-CD set documenting the three-night stand at the since-shuttered venue in the Grateful Dead’s hometown, was released in 2009. The GD lineup at the time featured guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, keyboardist Keith Godchaux, vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. Recordings were made by Betty Cantor-Jackson.

2024 is the fourth year the Grateful Dead has presented a yule log on YouTube. The festive tradition started in 2021 with audio from the London shows on the Dead’s legendary Europe ’72 Tour. In 2022, the band went with audio of their November 1973 three-night stand at the Winterland and last year’s selections were the 1974 concerts from the 2018 release Pacific Northwest ’73–’74: The Complete Recordings.

1977 was a year filled with special shows for the Grateful Dead and the June concerts at Winterland Ballroom were no exception. Highlights include a sizzling “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire On The Mountain” from the 7th, an otherworldly “Estimated Prophet” > “Eyes Of The World” sequence from the 8th and over 30 minutes of the beloved trifecta “Help On The Way”/”Slipknot!”/”Franklin’s Tower” from the 9th.
