Grateful Dead Performs ‘Sugaree’ In 1988: Pro-Shot Video
The Grateful Dead released pro-shot video of “Sugaree” for their All The Years Live video series. The footage comes from the band’s October 1 concert at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California near their hometown of San Francisco.
GD debuted “Sugaree” on July 31, 1971 at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, as per The Setlist Program. The tune would remain a live staple until the end of the band’s tenure in 1995, which Dead archivist David Lemieux attests to in his note accompanying the video.
Read Lemieux’s words below:
Played more than 350 times since its debut in 1971, Sugaree was played every year of the 25 years it was around, 1971-1995, and was always standout. Whether it was shorter, mellow versions 1971-1974 or the longer, more jammed out versions that started to take shape from 1976 onward, it was a song Jerry always delivered with passion.
