The Grateful Dead Performs ‘Sugaree’ In 1974: Pro-Shot Video
The Grateful Dead released pro-shot video of “Sugaree” as part of their All The Years Live video series. The performance comes from San Francisco’s legendary Winterland Ballroom in October 1974.
Footage from the Dead’s five-night run at the famed venue that month would become the 1977 concert film, The Grateful Dead Movie. While “Sugaree” didn’t appear on the original cut, it featured in the bonus section of the 2004 DVD release on which GD archivist David Lemieux lent his expertise.
Lemieux included a note along with the All The Years Live “Sugaree” video. Read it below:
When we were producing the DVD of The Grateful Dead Movie in 2004, the first unreleased song we transferred to see if we’d be able to include bonus songs was this version of Sugaree. It was selected for a number of reasons: it was excellent; there were several camera angles filmed, and it was short-enough to do a test on. Once the 16mm film was transferred and edited, and then synced with the audio, we realized we’d be able to include plenty of bonus material. This wonderful Sugaree began that process.
