Grateful Dead Performs ‘Scarlet Begonias’ In 1974: Pro-Shot Video
The Grateful Dead shared pro-shot video of “Scarlet Begonias” for this week’s installment of their All The Years Live video series. The clip comes from GD’s October 19, 1974 concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom.
At the time, “Scarlet Begonias” was a relatively new song. The Grateful Dead debuted the classic tune in early 1973, as per The Setlist Program, and it later kicked off the second side of From The Mars Hotel, released in June 1974. The footage of the ’74 Winterland “Scarlet” came included in the bonus material for the 2004 Grateful Dead Movie DVD, as GD archivist David Lemieux explained in his notes accompanying the video:
When we were working on selecting the Bonus Material for the Grateful Dead Movie DVD, we looked at Jerry’s long list of songs that he considered including in the original movie, and this “Scarlet Begonias” was one of them. It features some wonderful vocal improvisation by Donna Jean during the instrumental section at the end of the song.
