Watch Grateful Dead Perform ‘Loser’ In 1990: Pro-Shot Video
The Garcia/Hunter classic was filmed at Carter-Finley Stadium on July 10, 1990.
The Grateful Dead’s “Loser” performance from July 10, 1990 is this week’s installment of the All The Years Live video series. “Loser” was the second song of the night at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina during one of keyboardist Brent Mydland’s final concerts.
Jerry Garcia offers passionate vocals and strong guitar playing on a song he wrote with lyricist Robert Hunter that was included on his debut solo album in 1972. Garcia and Mydland were joined in the GD lineup at the time by guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. Sadly, Mydland died just over two weeks later from an accidental drug overdose.
“Another standout from Jerry’s debut solo album, ‘Loser’ joined the repertoire in February 1971, along with so many other Grateful Dead classics including ‘Bird Song,’ ‘Wharf Rat,’ ‘Playing In The Band,’ and many others,” wrote archivist David Lemieux in a note accompanying the video. “It remained a consistent part of the repertoire until 1995, a reliably excellent Jerry first set song.”
