The latest episode of the Guess The Year podcast finds Grahame Lesh and Brian Lesh guessing the year of live Grateful Dead recordings. GD bassist Phil Lesh‘s sons also chat with host/curator Mike McClure about a variety of topics including their Terrapin Crossroads Presents events.

While avoiding spoilers of how Grahame and Brian did in guessing the years, the brothers shared fascinating insight into how members of Phil Lesh & Friends are picked. The pair also previewed Sunday Daydream Vol. 2 and talked about providing an outlet for the community following the closure of Terrapin Crossroads.

Another interesting conversation came in regards to the brothers’ opinions on the pros and cons of having two pianists onstage. Grahame and Brian went on to discuss Bob Weir‘s unique guitar playing and how they each evolved from children of a Grateful Dead member to huge fans of the band. Other topics hit upon were a comparison of Phil Lesh and Oteil Burbridge‘s bass playing and Phil's planet jams from Summer 2001.

Guess The Year was created during the pandemic by McClure after listening to the Grateful Dead Channel on SiriusXM. “The Sirius station pulls from the Dead’s endless archive of live shows at random, and as each track came on, I found myself guessing what year it was from. Initially, I was always wrong. Nowadays I’m only mostly wrong. But it was an entertaining game to play when driving around town, and I figured others would enjoy playing it too. I quickly learned Deadheads have been playing Guess the Year since before I was born,” McClure explained. “What has been great is watching each episode kind of overcome any competitive tension and turn into a wider discussion of each Deadhead’s stories, what they specifically appreciate about the band and its community.”
