Earlier this year, filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev’s long-in-the-making Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip played at select theaters across the country ahead of the movie’s debut on Amazon Prime Video. Deadheads in New York City and Los Angeles who missed the chance to see the 241-minute documentary on the big screen will have another opportunity.
Long Strange Trip will be screened at Ahrya Fine Arts in Los Angeles starting today and running through October 19. Then, Village East in New York City will host screenings between November 3 – 9. Bar-Lev spoke with many luminaries in the Grateful Dead community including surviving members of the band to put together Long Strange Trip. The film’s soundtrack combines dynamic live performances from throughout the Dead’s career with rare studio recordings. Viewers also get to see unguarded backstage moments and never-before-seen footage and photos.
The documentary is produced by Eric Eisner (Hamlet 2), Nick Koskoff (Bad Hurt), Justin Kreutzmann (The First Waltz), Ken Dornstein (My Brother’s Bomber) and Alex Blavatnik (For the Love of Spock). Executive producers include Martin Scorsese, Emma Tillinger Koskoff (The Wolf of Wall Street), Rick Yorn (The Wolf of Wall Street), Thomas J. Mangan IV (The Jack Bull), Alicia Sams (Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay), Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Andy Heller and Sandy Heller. Long Strange Trip is co-executive produced by Trixie Garcia.
