While the Grateful Dead put Dave’s Picks Volume 44 up for sale last week, the next installment of the live archival audio series has just been announced. Dave’s Picks Volume 45 will feature the band’s complete concerts held on October 1 and 2, 1977 at Portland, Oregon’s Paramount Theatre.
The early reveal for a collection due out early next year comes as Dave’s Picks 2023 subscriptions are now available for purchase via Dead.net. Deadheads who buy subscriptions will receive all four limited edition, numbered releases coming in 2023 delivered throughout the year. Additionally, a bonus disc for Dave’s Picks Volume 46 will be sent exclusively to 2023 Dave’s Picks subscribers.
1977 was among the best years in Grateful Dead history yet the band actually had the summer off unexpectedly after drummer Mickey Hart was injured in a car accident on June 20. The lineup of Hart, drummer Bill Kreutzmann, guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux, bassist Phil Lesh and keyboardist Keith Godchaux went from June 9 through September 3, 1977 without performing live. Over 100,000 fans witnessed the band’s return at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey on September 3, 1977 and then the Dead launched a fall tour with two nights in Seattle on September 28 and 29, 1977 before heading to Portland, Oregon.
Every note played by the Grateful Dead on October 1 and 2, 1977 is included on the 4-CD Dave’s Picks Volume 45. Renowned audio engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson recorded the previously unreleased shows. Archivist David Lemieux recommends the Portland concerts, “if you’re interested in peak era late 1977 Grateful Dead where it’s got all the elements of 1977 Dead plus the creatively inspired second sets that were the hallmark of ’76 with that kind of ‘going for it’ energy of 1978.”
