The Grateful Dead shared pro-shot video of “Casey Jones” as the next installment in their All The Years Live video series. The footage comes from the Dead’s legendary New Year’s Eve concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in 1978.

That show marked the final event ever held at the storied venue and also included performances from New Riders Of The Purple Sage and The Blues Brothers. Documentation of the marathon show would eventually become the 2003 Grateful Dead DVD, The Closing Of Winterland. GD archivist David Lemieux wrote about “Casey Jones” in his notes accompanying the video.

“Another well-known and much-loved tune from Workingman’s Dead, “Casey Jones” was played very sporadically after 1974, until it was finally retired on 3/27/93 in Albany, NY,” Lemieux wrote. “This performance from the Closing Of Winterland was the opening song of the encore, which they followed by “Johnny B. Goode” and “We Bid You Goodnight” before sending people out with breakfast into 1979.”
