The Grateful Dead premiered previously unreleased video from a 1993 concert for this week’s installment of the band’s All The Years Live video series. A cover of Bob Dylan‘s “All Along The Watchtower” was filmed on May 21, 1993 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California.
Bob Weir handled lead vocals on the song Dylan originally issued on his 1967 album, John Wesley Harding. The rest of the Dead’s lineup at the time featured guitarist Jerry Garcia, keyboardist Vince Welnick, bassist Phil Lesh and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann.

“All Along The Watchtower” followed “Drums” and “Space” at Shoreline on May 21, 1993. “Joining the Grateful Dead’s repertoire in June 1987, this Bob Dylan classic was worked up during rehearsals for the July 1987 Dylan & The Dead tour,” wrote Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux in a note accompanying the video. “The Dead, however, played it closer to Jimi Hendrix’s more famous version, which is to say it was guitar-driven and fierce. Usually appearing in the post-Space, pre-ballad slot, Watchtower was one of the hardest rocking songs of the night whenever the Dead played it.”
