Gov’t Mule Welcomes Steve Berlin In Portland
Jam titans Gov’t Mule continued a West Coast swing on Wednesday night with a performance at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon. The quartet was joined by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos for a song at the end of last night’s second set as well as the encore.
Guitarist Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis and bassist Jorgen Carlsson focused on originals over the course of their two sets in Portland. The band reached back to 2000’s Life Before Insanity to open with “Bad Little Doggie” and then pulled “Brand New Angel” off Mr. High & Mighty. While most of the first set featured classic material, Haynes & Co. fit the title track from their most recent album, Revolution Come … Revolution Go between oldies “Sco-Mule and “World Gone Wild” to end the frame.
Mule kicked off Wednesday’s second set with Revolution Come … Revolution Go standouts “Thorns Of Life” and “The Man I Want To Be.” Haynes then nodded to The Police by working “The Bed’s Too Big Without You” and “Message In A Bottle” lyrics within “Funny Little Tragedy.” Next came “Drawn That Way” and “Easy Times” from Revolution Come … Revolution Go and fan-favorite “Fool’s Moon.” The four-piece band was augmented by Steve Berlin on baritone saxophone for “Mule” to close out the second set. Berlin was also on hand for a cover of Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West” that served as the encore.
