Last night Gov’t Mule continued their tour in support of their most recent studio album Revolution Come…Revolution Go with a stop at the historic Fox Theater in Oakland, California. The Southern-jam titans treated the crowd to a two full sets, which included a sit-in from a longtime Bay Area associated musician during their encore.
Warren Haynes & Co. kicked things off with the pairing of “Traveling Tune,” from their aforementioned new studio release, and Mule staple “Thorazine Shuffle,” with Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was The Night Cold Was The Ground” up next. Al Green’s “I’m A Ram” followed, which featured the band teasing Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog.” The tune from the soul singer’s 1971 album Gets Next To You segued into “Unblow Your Horn,” before winding its way back into “I’m A Ram.” “Fallen Down,” from 2001’s Life Before Insanity and a jam on the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One came next, with “Revolution Come…Revolution Go,” “Easy Times” and “Stone Cold Rage” closing out the first set.
“Broke Down On The Brazos,” from 2009’s By A Thread got the second set off to a start. “Time To Confess” followed with a take on Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 Was 9” sandwiched in the middle of “Larger Than Life.” “Kind Of Bird,” proceeded a pair of Allman Brothers Band tunes with Gov’t Mule offering up “Come & Go Blues” and “Mountain Jam” with the band ending their second set with the way they started their first one with “Traveling Tune.”
When Gov’t Mule returned to the stage they were joined by Pete Sears, who’s laundry list of musical accomplishment includes playing on a handful of Rod Stewart’s early 1970s releases, as well as being a member of both Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna. With Sears on keyboards the band offered up the blues standard “It Hurts Me Too” and Timmy Shaw’s “Gonna Send You Back To Georgia” to close out the night.
Gov’t Mule continue their California run tonight with a show at the Ventura Theater.
