Gov’t Mule Welcomes Hook Herrera In Westbury

Coming into Wednesday night’s Gov’t Mule show, the big question was whether harmonica player Hook Herrera would sit-in with the band as he did on every other concert as part of the group’s spring tour. Hererra did indeed continue the trend last night at NYCB Theatre At Westbury in Westbury, New York.

Gov’t Mule opened their first of two sets in Westbury with “Railroad Boy” off By A Thread. The quartet then went the old school route in pairing “Thorazine Shuffle” and “Larger Than Life.” Next up was “Pressure Under Fire,” one of four tunes played off the recently released Revolution Come…Revolution Go. Next, Mule fit a bit of “Smoke On The Water” into “Sco-Mule” ahead of “Time To Confess” and “Dreams & Songs.” Hook Herrera made his first appearance of the night to end the first set. Herrera added to Revolution Come…Revolution Go’s “Burning Point” and Robert Johnson’s “32/20 Blues.”

The band came out without Herrera to kick off the second set with their first-ever “Red Baron.” Warren Haynes & Co. went on to jam out “King’s Highway” before tackling the title track from Revolution Come…Revolution Go. From there, Warren worked lyrics from “Message In A Bottle” and “The Bed’s Too Big Without You” by The Police into “Funny Little Tragedy” and Mule paired “World Boss” with Memphis Slim’s “Mother Earth.” After “Mr. Man” ended the frame, Herrera augmented the four-piece for an encore consisting of Muddy Waters’ “Champagne & Reefer” and the Allman Brothers Band’s “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’.”
