Gov’t Mule Welcomes Hook Herrera In Norway

After spending the first part of the summer stateside Gov’t Mule headed overseas for a quick one-off gig on Saturday night in Norway. The jam-titans served as the headlining band at the Notodden Blues Festival where they shared the stage with frequent collaborator Hook Herrera for a majority of their set.

Warren Haynes & Co. got their evening in the land of the midnight sun going with “Mule” from their 1995 self-titled debut. The band stuck with their earlier output next with “Thorazine Shuffle” before reaching for fan-favorite “Soulshine.” Harmonica ace Herrera emerged next. The augmented act dug in on a three-song stretched pairing “Lay Your Burden Down” with Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning” before serving up “Bad Little Doggie.” Mule again went back to their 1990s output for “Game Face,” which saw the four-piece act tease Weather Report’s “Birdland.” Allman Brothers Band classic “Dreams” and “Stone Cold Rage” from their most recent studio album Revolution Come…Revolution Go followed. Herrera returned to the stage for the set-closing version of Albert King’s “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.”

With this being a blues festival Gov’t Mule honored one of the genre’s icons with their encore selections. With help from Herrera, the band brought their night in Norway to a close with a pair of Elmore James songs as they dropped “Look On Yonder Wall” in the middle of “Mean Mistreatin’ Mama.”
