Watch Gov’t Mule Offer Live Debut Of ‘Peace…Like A River’ Cut In Maine

Gov’t Mule’s fall tour around their new album Peace…Like A River rolled into the State Theatre in Portland, Maine on Tuesday night. The band debuted a song from the record, “The River Only Flows One Way,” to launch the second set.

“The River Only Flows One Way” was released on Peace…Like A River on June 16, 2023. The studio version features spoken word from actor and musician Billy Bob Thornton. The live debut saw guitarist Warren Haynes handling Billy Bob’s part as well as the “Oh, how could you hurt me so?” bridge on the reggae-tinged tune which also saw keyboardist Danny Louis breaking out the trombone.

Mule kicked off the set with a cover of Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West.” The quartet — Haynes, Louis, drummer Matt Abts and bassist Kevin Scott — stuck mostly to originals in the first set with “Larger Than Life,” off Mule’s album Dose, coming in the second song slot ahead of the title track to Warren and company’s 2017 album, Revolution Come, Revolution Go.

The first set also saw the band performing Dose’s “Birth Of The Mule” ahead of additional Peace…Like A River track “Shake Our Way Out.” Gov’t Mule capped the first frame with Howlin’ Wolf’s “I Asked for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline).”

The reggae of “The River Only Flows One Way” set the tone for the second set. After a cover of The Beatles’ “She Said She Said,” the band headed into the Grateful Dead’s “Fire On The Mountain” followed by “Reblow Your Mind” off Gov’t Mule’s 2007 reggae album, Mighty High, and back again.

Warren and company also delivered a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Effigy.” Mule sealed the second set with “Mr. Man” off their 2004 LP, Déjà Voodoo, before returning to encore with the Haynes-penned Allman Brothers Band song, “Soulshine.”
