Gov’t Mule & Railroad Earth Collaborate In Ohio

By Andy Kahn Jun 30, 2019 10:06 am PDT

Members of Gov’t Mule and Railroad Earth exchanged sit-ins during their sets Saturday at the Smoky Run Music Festival in Butler, Ohio. Mule multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis first joined RRE and then Tim Carbone, John Skehan and Matt Slocum came out during Gov’t Mule’s headlining set at Clear Fork Adventure Resort.

Louis added clavinet to Railroad Earth’s set-closing rendition of “Elko.” A few songs into Gov’t Mule’s set, frontman Warren-Haynes tapped Carbone to add fiddle and Skehan mandolin to “Patchwork Quilt.” Haynes recorded his 2015 solo album, Ashes & Dust with Railroad Earth and toured with the band in support of the record. Saturday’s collaborations continued as Slocum emerged to join Louis on keys for The Allman Brothers Band’s “Mountain Jam.”

The headliners closed out their performance with “Time To Confess” and “Mule” featuring “I’ve Been Working” played within. The Smoky Run Music Festival concludes today with a lineup featuring The Travelin’ McCourys, Larry Keel and more. Check out a couple of clips of “Mountain Jam” posted by Carla Orvis Hunt and the festival below:]
