Update: A photo gallery of last night’s show from photographer Jeremy Williams has been added below.
Last night Gov’t Mule and Blackberry Smoke brought along moe. for their Smokin’ Mule Tour stop at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. The music-filled night concluded with members of all three bands joining together for a collaborative encore.
Blackberry Smoke kicked off the night with an opening set that included a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Ramble On Rose” and Led Zeppelin’s “Your Time Is Gonna Come” as well as their original “One Horse Town.” They were followed by moe. opening with the long played original “Rebubula” that transition into a rendition of “Lazarus” which according to a note on the setlist was dedicated to the memory of Glenn Roberts. moe.’s set was highlighted by a sequence featuring extensive patches of improvisation as they weaved “Moth” with “High And Low” and “Brent Black.” In a nod to the band that would follow them, moe. busted out a cover of “Thorazine Shuffle” for the first time since 2012 before closing their set with “Billy Goat.”
Gov’t Mule was the final band to perform last night at the famed outdoor venue. Guitarist Warren Haynes led the quartet through staples such as “Soulshine” and “Banks Of The Deep End.” Mule worked in a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 Were 9” within “Larger Than Life” and also took on The Beatles “And Your Bird Can Sing” and Pink Floyd’s “Fearless” during their set. The band also returned the favor by covering moe.’s “Opium.”
For Gov’t Mule’s encore, Blackberry Smoke guitarist Charlie Starr and keyboardist Brandon Still, as well as all of the members of moe. – guitarists Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey, bassist Rob Derhak, drummer Vinnie Amico and percussionist Jim Loughlin – joined in on a take on Bob Dylan & The Band’s “I Shall Be Released.”
