Gov’t Mule came to the Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln, California near Sacramento on Friday. The band — which saw longtime Phil Lesh & Friends drummer John Molo filling in for an ailing Matt Abts — welcomed opener and guitarist Lukas Nelson for CSNY and Neil Young classics to close the concert.
After welcoming Lukas, the encore began with guitarist Warren Haynes smoking out of the gate on the David Crosby-penned CSNY cut, “Almost Cut My Hair,” off the legendary supergroup’s 1970s album Déjà Vu. Warren handled the first verse while Lukas took the second.

Nelson took the first solo and channeled his longtime collaborator Neil Young before Haynes reeled off a wailing affair. Warren helmed the final verse before leading the band into Young’s “Cortez the Killer.” Nelson and Haynes would once again swap verses on the slow-burner, which was set alight with fretboard fireworks from both guitarists.

Gov’t Mule launched the concert with their cover of The Staple Singers’ “Hammer and Nails.” The show with Molo included one of the Grateful Dead’s early covers and Dead adjacent tunes: Little Milton’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do,” Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out My Life Woman” — which were staple covers in the Jerry Garcia Band catalog — and Bobby Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light.” Additional covers included Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind” and Ann Peebles’ “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home Tonight” to close the main set.
Gov’t Mule turned to their 2021 LP Heavy Load Blues with “Wake Up Dead” in the second song slot. Mule also delivered songs from their latest studio album, offering Peace… Like A River’s (2023) “The River Only Flows One Way” and “After the Storm” mid-set.
Matt Abts will be back behind the kit with Gov’t Mule tonight in Tucson, Arizona.
