Wednesday marked the anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s death and Gov’t Mule honored the occasion by finishing their set at Maine State Pier in Portland, Maine with five songs from the Grateful Dead repertoire. Gov’t Mule was joined by members of opening act Galactic throughout the duration of the Jerry tribute.

Warren Haynes & Co. opened with a “Railroad Boy” > “Traveling Tune” sequence. Galactic saxophonist Ben Ellman was the first guest as he added to a cover of “It Hurts Me Too.” A series of songs from Mule’s recently released Revolution Come…Revolution Go came next. The Dead portion of the set began with a jam on “The Other One” featuring drummer Stanton Moore.

Gov’t Mule and Moore worked “The Other One” jam into “Drums” which gave way to “Dark Star.” Galactic keyboardist Rich Vogel emerged for “Dark Star” and stuck around for the rest of the set. Mule, Moore and Vogel moved from “Dark Star” into a jam based on “St. Stephen” followed by the beautiful ballad “Loser.” A take on “Morning Dew” ended Mule’s set. Warren led the band on a “Patchwork Quilt” encore to end the night. Haynes wrote “Patchwork Quilt” in the days after Jerry’s death about Garcia.
