On Saturday night Gov’t Mule wrapped up a two-night stand at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. For the second night in a row, the formidable Southern rock act did things on their own without any special guests as they delivered a lengthy two-set affair that saw them offer up a debut cover.
Gov’t Mule got their second night at the historic rock palace going with the one-two punch of “Traveling Tune” > “Railroad Boy.” From there the band reached back to their 1995 self-titled debut for “Mule” ahead of “Beautifully Broken.” The four-piece act then looked to their most recent studio output for back-to-back selections delivering “Stone Cold Rage” and “Drawn That Way” from Revolution Come…Revolution Go. Next up came “Forsaken Savior,” which saw Mule work in a tease of Dave Mason’s “Sad & Deep As You” from his 1970 release Alone Together. The iconic jam act brought their penultimate frame of the run to a close with “Whisper In Your Soul,” from 2013’s Shout!, their first “Little Toy Brain” of 2018 and “Funny Little Tragedy.”
Warren Haynes & Co. kicked-off their fourth set of the run with “Life Before Insanity.” “Thorns Of Life” saw action for just the seventh time in the tunes brief live history. The quartet then dove head-first into a jam-filled run that started with the old-school classic “Trane,” which segued into a cover Mahavishnu Orchestra’s “Eternity’s Breath” and concluded with a jam on the Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen.” The monster 15-song second set rolled on with a pair of songs from their latest release, followed by a trio of selections from High & Mighty with “Unring The Bell,” “Endless Parade” and “Mr. High & Mighty.”
The biggest surprise of the night came next as Gov’t Mule offered up their debut take on Pearl Jam’s “Come Back,” from Seattle band’s 2006 self-titled release. “Inside Outside Woman Blues” was trotted out for just the second time this year, with “World Boss,” the rarity “Bring On The Music,” which was played for just the 20th time ever and a nod back to the way the night started – “Traveling Tune” bringing things to a close.

Mule returned to the stage to close things out with a tune from Haynes’ solo catalog as they reached for “I’ll Be The One” from the guitarist’s 1993 album Tales of Ordinary Madness. Saturday night’s version saw them work in a jam on the Allman Brothers Band’s “Blue Sky” before returning back to “I’ll Be The One” to end the night.
