Gov’t Mule Debuts ‘Mighty High’ Track & Welcomes Guests In San Antonio

On Thursday night, Gov’t Mule played Austin where they welcomed a number of contributors to their recent Revolution Come…Revolution Go LP. A pair of those guests made the journey with the band to San Antonio on Friday night for Mule’s show at the Aztec Theatre.

Percussionist Rey Arteaga was the evening’s first guest, as he emerged in the middle of the first set for “Slackjaw Jezebel.” Arteaga stuck around and was joined by guitarist Gordie Johnson as well as for Mule’s renditions of “Freeway Jam,” “Come & Go Blues” and “Dreams” to end the first set. Gordie co-produced most of Gov’t Mule’s new album.

Arteaga was also the first guest of the second set. The conga player came out for “Fool’s Moon” three songs into the closing frame. He returned with Gordie for “I Believe To My Soul” a few songs later. Next up was a wild “I’m A Ram” > “So Ram, So Rong” > “Unblow Your Horn” > “I’m A Ram” sequence. The suite featured Gordie and Rey as well as the pair’s Big Sugar band mate (and Gordie’s wife) Alex Johnson on percussion.

Mule recorded “So Ram, So Rong,” an original reworking of “I’m A Ram” for 2007’s Mighty High. Friday was the first live version of “So Ram, So Rong” as per Setlist.FM. Gov’t Mule then returned to the stage for a “Statesboro Blues” encore featuring Rey and Gordie.
