Gov’t Mule Covers ‘In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed’ With Steve Elson In New Haven

Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule hit the road to start Fall Tour on Friday night at College Street Music Hall in New Haven, Connecticut. The concert featured a number of appearances from multi-instrumentalist Steve Elson including on an Allman Brothers Band cover played two years to the day of the group’s final show.

The quartet came out of the gates with a series of originals including “Mule,” “Banks Of The Deep End,” “Rocking Horse” and “Birth Of The Mule.” Elson then made his first appearance of the night as he added saxophone to a cover of Allen Toussaint’s “On Your Way Down” and the original “Sco-Mule.” The first set came to a close with renditions of “Unring The Bell” and “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.”

Gov’t Mule opened the second set with the beloved “Thorazine Shuffle” and worked a tease of “Oye Como Va” into the mix. Next up was a cover of Bob Marley’s “Lively Up Yourself,” ahead of “Game Face.” Elson then returned to the stage to add flute to “Sad & Deep As You.” He came back after a “Drums” sequence to add sax to “Kind Of Bird” > “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” > “Kind Of Bird.” Last night was the first time Mule had played “Liz Reed” since this past New Year’s Eve. The quartet then finished up the set with a cover of Al Green’s “I’m A Ram” and an encore of “Tastes Like Wine” and ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid.” On Saturday Mule plays the Palace Theatre in Albany, where they are expected to honor Traffic with Elson aboard as special guest.
