Gov’t Mule Busts Out ZZ Top Cover & Welcomes Blackberry Smoke Members In Utica

A Summer Tour featuring Gov’t Mule and Blackberry Smoke continued on Tuesday night at Saranac Brewery in Utica, New York; where once again members of Blackberry Smoke added to a collaborative encore with the Mule. Warren Haynes & Co. also busted out a cover that was among the first they ever played, but had been shelved for over a decade.
Gov’t Mule opened with a series of originals including “Steppin’ Lightly” and “Mr. High & Mighty.” An instrumental cover of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ “Lively Up Yourself” paved the way for the return of “Just Got Paid.” The ZZ Top cover was a staple of early Mule performances and the band recorded their version for The Tel-Star Sessions in 1994. More recently “Just Got Paid” had disappeared from the rotation as last night was the first time Gov’t Mule played the song since April 21, 2005.
The covers kept coming with a double dose of Pink Floyd in “One Of These Days” and “Fearless” as well as Humble Pie’s “30 Days In The Hole” and Ray Charles’ “I Don’t Need No Doctor.” When Gov’t Mule returned for the encore, they were accompanied by Charlie Starr and Brandon Still of Blackberry Smoke for a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree” and Warren’s own “Soulshine.”
