Gov’t Mule Covers Four Beatles Songs In Rocky Mount

On Sunday night Gov’t Mule played Harvester Performance Center in Rocky Mount, Virginia; which is the band’s last show until the end of the month. Warren Haynes & Co. worked a total of four Beatles covers into the two-set performance including two during the encore.
Last night’s performance comes just days before Howard Stern premieres a special on the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ Revolver featuring Mule’s cover of “And Your Bird Can Sing.” However “And You Bird Can Sing” was not one of the Beatles covers played in Rocky Mount. Gov’t Mule opened with “Hammer And Nails” and “Banks Of The Deep End” before treating the crowd to a first double dose of Beatles covers: “She Said She Said > “Tomorrow Never Knows.” Later in the first set, the band threw a “She’s So Heavy” ending onto “Monkey Hill” ahead of the “Slackjaw Jezebel” set closer.
The second set started with a pair of covers in Son House’s “Grinnin’ In Your Face” and Tom Waits’ “Get Behind The Mule.” Haynes and his quartet then played a series of originals including “Flip Wilson,” “Thorazine Shuffle” and “Raven Black Night.” The rest of the second set featured a mix of originals (“Endless Parade”/”Mule”) and covers (“Catfish Blues”/”30 Days In The Hole”/”Who Do You Love.”) When Gov’t Mule returned for the encore, they had two more Beatles covers in store as they played “Yer Blues” for the first time since Mountain Jam in June and “I’m So Tired” for the first time since July 17, 2015.
