Gov’t Mule brought the 2017 installment of Island Exodus to a close on Tuesday night at Jewel Paradise Cove in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. The band filled the stage with guests for most of their marathon second set.

Warren Haynes & Co. focused on originals for the beginning and middle of last night’s first set. The quartet was joined by saxophonist Ron Holloway for a jam on the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One” and The J.B.’s “Doing It To Death” to end the opening stanza. Mule came out of the gates for the second set with “Thorazine Shuffle” and worked “Funny Little Tragedy” within. Then, Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo emerged for a take on Blind Faith’s “Presence Of The Lord.”

The second set rolled on with a version of the Grateful Dead’s “Bertha” that featured Hidalgo, Steven Campbell, Matt Jennings and Jack Ryan. Mule’s Matt Abts and Jorgen Carlsson sat-out “Bertha” as they did the “Deal” that followed. “Deal” included the same guests as “Bertha” along with Nicki Bluhm and Eric Krasno and without Hidalgo. Gov’t Mule then debuted a cover of Aretha Franklin’s “Dr. Feelgood (Love Is A Serious Business)” along with the Island Exodus Horns, Bluhm, Krasno, Ryan and Jennings.

Up next was “Sco-Mule” with Holloway, Steve Berlin and Marcus King. A tribute to Prince followed featuring “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Purple Rain.” Marcus King sang “Purple Rain” as he did on New Year’s Eve. Krasno, the Island Exodus Horns and Island Exodus Singers were also among the guests on the Prince portion of the set. The finale of Gov’t Mule’s time in Jamaica was the ending of David Bowie’s “All The Young Dudes” featuring Krasno, the horns, the singers and King. Gov’t Mule returns to the road in early March for a pair of shows in Nevada and an appearance at McDowell Mountain Music Festival in Arizona.
