Gov’t Mule Concludes Run With Galactic In Nebraska With Loads Of Collaborations

Last night Gov’t Mule wrapped up a string of dates with Galactic serving as their opening act with a show at the SumTur Amphitheater in Papillion, Nebraska. The two bands seemed to thoroughly enjoy their time on the road together, as Warren Haynes & Co. welcomed members of the New Orleans act to the stage with them at every stop that they shared the bill together, with last night being no exception.

The Southern jam titans opened the night a trio of old school tunes “Mule,” “Rocking Horse” and “Banks Of The Deep End,” before offering up their first cover of the night with a take on Ray Charles’ “I Believe To My Soul.” “Million Miles From Yesterday,” from their 2006 release High & Mighty and Bob Marley & The Wailers’ “Lively Up Yourself” followed. The four-piece act offered up a pair of tracks from their most recent studio release Revolution Come…Revolution Go, ahead of “Drawn That Way,” “No Need To Suffer,” “Painted Silver Light” and “Pressure Under Fire.”

Mule next welcomed their first guests of the night with guitarist Jeff Raines and horn player Shamarr Allen of Galactic joining them for a take on “Sco-Mule,” which featured the augmented act teasing Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water.” Raines and Allen remained on the stage, as they were joined by more members of their band with Erica Falls, Ben Ellman and Rich Vogel for a cover of Al Green’s “Take Me To The River.”

Gov’t Mule next offered up a pair of tunes on their own with take on “Mr. Man,” from their 2004 release Deja Voodoo, which saw the band again reference Deep Purple by including a tease of “Highway Star” and a take on “Streamline Woman.” Galactic saxophonist Ben Ellman than reemerged for a monster sequence of “Lay Your Burden Down” > “Smokestack Lightning” > “Lay Your Burden Down.” Shamarr Allen joined Ellman, as the pair added horns to fan-favorite “Soulshine” to close the set.

When Gov’t Mule returned for their encore they were joined by all the members of Galactic for a take on New Orleans’ legend Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out Of My Life, Woman,” which was last played by Mule back in September of last year.

Gov’t Mule return to the stage tonight with a headlining gig at the Red Rocks Amphitheater, where they will be joined by Yonder Mountain String Band and the Marcus King Band on the bill.
