Goose wrapped up a two night stand at Louisville Palace Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky on Wednesday. The jam quartet welcomed Louisville’s own Jim James of My Morning Jacket for one of his solo tunes and more.

Jim James came on to help Goose wrap up their second set with a rendition of his “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.).” The cut off James’ 2013 solo debut album has existed in Goose’s repertoire since 2020, as per ElGoose.net. The band’s 12th play of “State Of The Art” naturally saw Jim leading the way on the vibey tune with Goose guitarist Rick Mitarotonda providing backing vocals and an inspired guitar solo.

Jim also returned with the band for the encore, a cover of The Band‘s cover of “Don’t Do It.” Penned by legendary Motown songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland, “Baby Don’t Do It” was first recorded by Marvin Gaye in 1964. The song was also a live favorite of The Band.

“Don’t Do It” has long been in Goose’s live repertoire as well, with the first known version coming in 2016. With Rick on lead vocals, Jim James joined on high harmonies in Louisville. The cover also saw a honky tonk piano run from keyboardist Peter Anspach and a blast off from Mitarotonda.

Goose kicked off the concert with a substantial “Jive II” off their 2016 debut LP, Moon Cabin. “Atlas Dogs” then gave way to a 20-minute “Earthling or Alien?” Goose wrapped up the first set by finishing off the “Slow Ready” they started in Louisville on Tuesday.

Set two got underway with well-jammed versions of “Arrow” and “Rosewood Heart” ahead of a cover of The Beatles‘ nascent psychedelic favorite “Tomorrow Never Knows.” “Dripfield” was then expanded past the 20-minute mark ahead of the Jim James sit-in.
