Goose and Dawes topped the bill for opening night of the Borderland Festival on Friday. The frequent collaborators — Dawes members joined Goose around the 2022 Newport Folk Festival and at LOCKN' 2021 — teamed back up to trade sit-ins at Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora, New York near Buffalo.
Dawes kicked off their set with “Ghost In The Machine” off their latest studio album, Misadventures of Doomscroller. The band also performed the record’s “Someone Else’s Café/Doomscroller Tries to Relax” along with favorites “If I Wanted Someone,” “When My Time Comes” and “All Your Favorite Bands.”

After “Feed The Fire,” Goose guitarist Rick Mitarotonda joined Dawes for “From a Window Seat.” Frontman and guitarist Taylor Goldsmith led the band through the track off Dawes’ 2013 album, Stories Don’t End. Mitarotonda then strung together a slew of spicy licks over the course of a roughly two-minute solo on the six-minute rendition.
Watch Dawes welcome Rick Mitarotonda below:
Goose launched their set with a “Flopener” (“Flodown”) followed by the relatively new tune “Mr. Action,” debuted on December 18, 2022 at Boulder’s Fox Theater for a Conscious Alliance benefit concert. “Pancakes,” a song originating in keyboardist/guitarist Peter Anspach’s Great Blue project, came next ahead of “Honeybee,” which saw Jon “Coach” Lombardi adding rainstick.
The quintet then offered their cover of Father John Misty’s “Writing A Novel,” before welcoming Dawes guitarist Taylor Goldsmith and drummer Griffin Goldsmith on “Rosewood Heart.” Griffin took a seat at Goose percussionist Jeff Arevalo’s full kit while Jeff picked up a guitar for the tune off Goose’s 2016 debut studio album Moon Cabin. Following a sparkling piano solo from Peter, Taylor got things cooking with an outstanding solo before Rick tore into the tune. The +27-minute rendition then took a vibey turn, which Rick whipped up again into a final blast off.
Goose closed out their headlining Borderland set with “Animal” before returning to encore with a “Slow Ready” and “Arcadia” pairing. Watch Taylor Goldsmith and Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes join Goose on “Rosewood Heart” below:
