Glen “Spot” Lockett, the influential producer and engineer for the independent punk rock label SST Records, has died at age 72. Spot’s death was confirmed by former SST co-owner Joe Carducci.
Born Glenn Michael Lockett on July 1, 1951, in Los Angeles, Lockett’s father fought in World War II as a member of the all-Black Tuskegee Airmen. In the early 1970s, Spot moved to Hermosa Beach, California where his fateful meeting with SST founder Greg Ginn when Spot was working at a vegan restaurant, would lead to their long-term collaboration.
Spot soon began playing bass with Ginn’s group that would become Black Flag. He left to focus on producing and engineering for Black Flag and other SST bands such as the Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, Descendents, Meat Puppets, Misfits and more between 1979 and 1986. Spot then relocated to Austin, Texas and pursued other interests which included his work as an accomplished photographer and writer.
Messages from Hüsker Dü frontman Bob Mould, Minutemen bassist Mike Watt, the Meat Puppets and others have been shared in response to Spot’s death. Carducci’s message stated Spot died on Saturday, March 4 at Morningside Healthcare in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Spot recently suffered a stroke and because of fibrosis was waiting for a lung transplant.
