Garage A Trois shared a new single, “The Epic.” The song will appear on the experimental funk trio’s upcoming album, Calm Down Cologne, due out on April 16 via Royal Potato Family.

Garage A Trois announced Calm Down Cologne in February and the new album marks the band’s first with the original lineup — guitarist Charlie Hunter, drummer Stanton Moore and saxophonist Skerik — in 22 years. The trio heralded Calm Down Cologne with the title track, the lone pre-composed song on the record, and now follow with “The Epic.”

“Charlie and Stanton have been playing together for 25 years. There is a limitless quantity of output that they are able to generate,” Skerik said about the band’s organic creative process. “My job is to stay out of the way of their immovable freight train of rhythmic power and add melodic content on top.”

The new track sees Skerik adding melodic content with Modal 001 synthesizer and Mellotron simultaneously as well as effects-laden Fender Rhodes and tenor saxophone over Hunter and Moore’s rhythmic foundation. The trio also welcomed Seattle vocalist Christa Wells to add the record’s only overdub, “a Stereolab-esque inspired vocal matching the sax/keys line,” as per a press release.
