One of the nation’s most prestigious music festivals, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, begins on Friday at the Fair Grounds in the Crescent City. The first weekend runs through Sunday, April 29 while the second weekend spans May 3 – 6. Performances from New Orleans’ own Galactic are a staple of the event and this week’s Throwback Thursday features professionally-shot video of the band’s 2013 Jazz Fest set.
On May 4, 2013 Galactic played the event’s Gentilly Stage. Percussionist Mike Dillon and trombonist Corey Henry agumented the band for the entire performance. After opening with “Karate” from 2012’s Carnivale Electricos, Galactic brought out vocalist Corey Glover. The Living Colour frontman led the funk act on a run of songs that included a cover of the Beatles’ “I Am The Walrus.” One of the highlights of the set came next, when Corey Henry’s young daughter Jazz Henry brought the house down in dueting with her father on “Keep Steppin’.”

In 2013, The Revivalists were an up-and-coming band with frontman David Shaw starting to make a name for himself. Shaw wowed the assembled crowd when he emerged to lead Galactic through the live staple “Hey Na Na.” The vocalist also impressed on covers of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City” and Old Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money.” Galactic then pulled from Ya-Ka-May with a “Boe Money” that featured Stanton Moore and Mike D. working their magic within. Finally, Corey Glover and David Shaw return to the stage for the gorgeous “Does It Really Make A Difference.”
