For the tour and new album, Garrett “G. Love” Dutton will be joined by his original trio mates -upright bassist James “Jimi Jazz” Prescott and drummer Jeffrey “The Houseman” Clemens. Sugar marks the first time the pair will back Dutton on an album in eight years. The LP is set for a April 22 release via Brushfire Records and was recorded mainly at Brushfire Records’ “Solar Powered Plastic Plant” studio in Los Angeles.
“We wanted to take it back to the old-school vibe of the first record, those rich, warm sounds from when we were rocking small clubs and going on that acoustic feeling,” says Prescott in a statement announcing the album. Sugar features a number of special guests including legendary vocalist and current Oscar nominee Merry Clayton, Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo, Marc Broussard, Eric Krasno, Shamarr Allen and Kristy Lee.
At each of the trio’s 45 dates they will perform their 1994 debut in its entirety. The tour begins on February 5 at the 20th Century Theatre in Cincinnati, OH and is currently set to run through an April 19th performance at Northern Lights Theatre in Milwaukee. An additional stand-alone date in Portland, OR is scheduled for May 18.
