The Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s current tour resumed on Tuesday night with the first of two shows at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey. Guitarists Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi led the huge ensemble through a pair of sets filled with memorable originals and a stellar mix of covers.
Susan showed off her incredible pipes on the “Anyhow” opener and then belted out “Do I Look Worried” ahead of a scorching solo from Derek. The run of originals resumed with “Part Of Me,” “Don’t Miss Me” from Derek’s DTB days and one of the newest TTB songs, “Shame.” Up next were covers of Leonard Cohen’s “Bird On The Wire” and the traditional “Statesboro Blues” before the group brought the first set to a close with a ten-minute “Let Me Get By.”
Tuesday’s second set began with “Rollin’ & Tumblin” ahead of “Don’t Drift Away” and a standout rendition of Delaney & Bonnie’s “Comin’ Home.” A tender “It’s So Heavy” followed along with the TTB’s recently debuted cover of “Goin’ Down Slow.” The blues kept coming with “How Blue Can You Get?” From there, the group tackled “Get What You Deserve” and then wowed the crowd with an adventurous “Idle Wind” that spanned nearly 20 minutes to end the frame. The Tedeschi Trucks Band ended their visit to Monmouth County with a Susan/Kofi Burbridge duet on Leon Russell’s “Song For You” and a powerful “Made Up Mind” as the evening’s encore.
