Full Show Audio & Video: Trey Anastasio Concludes Solo Acoustic Run In Portsmouth
Guitarist Trey Anastasio brought a three-show solo acoustic run to a close at The Music Hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on Saturday night. The Phish frontman presented one lengthy set filled with plenty of songs he’d never played in the solo acoustic format before as well as an encore featuring three tunes he performed earlier in the run. Trey mixed in stories during the show which featured plenty of singalongs.
Anastasio opened with his first ever solo acoustic versions of “Wingsuit” and “Fee” with the latter containing a bit of a looping jam. Trey then presented “NICU” after telling the story of the March 6 & 7, 1992 shows at the venue where Phish debuted the song and many others. The guitarist thought the concerts took place 15 years ago and was quickly reminded they actually went down 25 years ago. He followed “NICU” with a story about the Roskilde Festival in 1992 ahead of “Steam.”
“Breath & Burning” was one of the newest songs played during the set and led into a rollicking “Back On The Train.” Anastasio then introduced “Dog Faced Boy” with a discussion of what songwriting means to him because he loves he wrote the song with Jon Fishman and Tom Marshall. A run of “My Friend, My Friend,” “Dirt” and “46 Days” came next ahead of a debut cover of Paul Simon’s “American Tune.” From there, Trey dusted off “Sleep Again” and “Two Versions Of Me” before the solo acoustic debut of “Sleeping Monkey.” The crowd was particularly amped on “Bathtub Gin,” while a three-song run of “Maze,” “Gumbo” and “Ghost” were all filled with interesting moments.
Trey’s main set ended with a tender “Joy” and a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Shine A Light.” For the encore, Anastasio treated the capacity crowd to “Bouncing Around The Room,” “Wilson” and “More.” Anastasio hits the road with TAB starting in April.
