An eventful run through the Northeast ended for Umphrey’s McGee on Sunday night at Anthology in Rochester, New York. The band continued on without guitarist Jake Cinninger once again and were aided by saxophonist Joshua Redman for portions of both sets.

Umphrey’s has been digging deep for this series of shows without Cinninger, who is recovering from a “wicked flu.” The trend was on full display in Rochester last night as they played nine songs that had been shelved for at least 40 shows. After opening with “Domino Theory” UM dusted off “Loose Ends” for the first time in 41 shows as well as “Turn & Dub” and “Yoga Pants” for the first time in 46 shows. Redman then emerged to add to “The Linear,” “Example 1” and “Make It Right” to end the first set.

Sunday’s second set began with Redman assisting Umphrey’s on “The Triple Wide” and “Upwards.” UM then busted out “1000 Places To See Before You Die” for the first time in 65 shows and just the fourth time ever since its debut on March 24, 2007. “Similar Skin” was up next and followed by a cover of Bob Marley’s “Lively Up Yourself,” which UM hadn’t played in a span of 130 shows. Redman left the stage to leave the five-piece to conclude the set with the awe-inspiring sequence of “Robot World” > “Front Porch” > “Muff II: The Revenge” > “Front Porch.” While “Front Porch” hadn’t been played in 67 shows, the biggest bust out of the night was “Muff II.” The golden oldie returned to action after a whopping 311 shows as it was last played December 30, 2013. Sunday’s “Muff II” was just the fourth since drummer Kris Myers joined the band in 2003.

There were more rarities in store for the encore in Rochester. Keyboardist Joel Cummins kicked off the encore with a solo rendition of “Orfeo,” returning after a 44-show absence. The rest of the band then came out for a cover of Fugazi’s “Waiting Room” – last played on August 4, 2016. Umphrey’s McGee next plays on Thursday in Grand Rapids and hopefully Jake will be back in the fold.
