After two nights at the big arena in town, Umphrey’s McGee ended the 2nd annual Blue Ridge Rockway with a more intimate affair at The Orange Peel in Asheville on Sunday. The sextet dug deep into their repertoire to fill the setlist with three songs they hadn’t performed in at least 70 shows and 12 tunes they hadn’t performed in at least 10 shows.
Umphrey’s kicked off the show with one of their newest originals, “North Route.” A few songs later they took another new original, “Cut Off,” for an extended spin ahead of “Example 1.” Up next was a Jake Cinninger original that predates the band, “Ride On Pony.” UM hadn’t performed “Ride On Pony” since January 31, 2011 – a span of 636 shows. Another bust out was soon to follow as the six-piece dusted off a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Dancing Days” for the first time in 72 shows.
Sunday’s second set began with “Attachments” and “Utopian Fir.” Shortly after starting “Fir,” percussionist Andy Farag made his way to center stage to lead his mates through a cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Ain’t No Fun (If The Homies Can’t Have None).” Umphrey’s hadn’t covered that particular Snoop classic since April 18, 2015 – a span of 169 shows. The band then proceeded to deliver an exploratory “Utopian Fir” ahead of “No Diablo.” Next up was an adventurous “The Triple Wide” which segued into the end of the “Mantis” UM had started in the first set. The third-ever performance of “Breaker” came next before “Booth Love” closed the second set. Umphrey’s then said farewell with a “Pay The Snucka” encore.
