For New Year’s Eve 2016 – 2017 moe. headed to the remote confines of Missoula, Montana for a performance at The Wilma. The band focused heavily on their oldest and most beloved material over the course of three jam-heavy sets as they only played three originals debuted in the 2000s with the most recent first appearing in 2007.
moe. foreshadowed the evening that laid ahead by opening with a 30-minute “Meat” > “Timmy Tucker” sequence. Guitarist Al Schnier’s “Gone” came next before the instrumental “Jazz Wank” led into the familiar pairing of “Spine Of A Dog” and “Buster.” The second set began with a cover as moe. reprised their Halloween antics by opening with Tomoyosu Hotel’s “Battle Without Honor or Humanity,” a song found in the Quentin Tarantino movie Kill Bill, Vol. 1. Up next was a masterful hour of music that combined “Four,” “Rebubula” and “Yodelittle.” moe. opened the section with “Four” and jammed into the start of “Rebubula” as they worked “Yodelittle” within before concluding “Four” and then “Rebubula.”
The band’s third set started with “Tubing The River Styx,” which gave way to “The Pit” ahead of moe. continuing the “Meat” that opened the evening. From there, moe. counted down to 2017 before covering the traditional “Auld Lang Syne.” The action moved on with the end of the “Brent Black” played one night earlier and the final section of “Meat.” moe. said farewell with an encore of their own “Stranger Than Fiction” and a debut cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” sung by Rob Derhak.
